The workplace is where many people spend most of their day and having a space that caters to the needs of those who work there, as well as those who visit as a client or customer, will always be our main priority when designing these projects. Our clients who are coming to us for a workplace-related project are some of our most diverse clientele because every space that we encounter is different and every company culture is unique.

A key to our success in this sector is our ability to understand the client by taking the time to research and learn how their company, and their employees, work throughout the day. There is a very human aspect that is incorporated into our work because we need to ensure we are meeting all of their needs, which includes even the social aspects of their jobs. Having completed numerous workplace-related projects has helped us learn how design trends change and how we can complete a timeless design that is both functional and inclusive.

Whether this is the only time or one of many times our client will be working with an architect to enhance their business space, we will work hand-in-hand with them to ensure that the end-result can effectively communicate their company’s brand and also be considered a part of their marketing scheme.

Medication Management

With three existing locations in Greensboro, the newest location renovated a facility previously used as a printing office consisting of retired printing equipment and a dark room. Lindsey Architecture was hired to transform the existing building's interior and exterior into to a new medical office space with exam rooms, lab, infusion room, offices, and conference spaces. The design includes a separate entry for contagious disease diagnoses and treatments, as well as medical trials.

Historic Shevell Building Renovation

The Shevell Building is a three-story, 15,000SF historic preservation project located at the corner of Elm Street and Lewis Street in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. Originally constructed for the Shevell Furniture Company in 1898, the building housed the company’s offices and retail areas on the first floor, and furniture production on the second and third floors. Lindsey Architecture collaborated with the owner/developer to convert the long vacant space into offices and retail facilities as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the south end of downtown Greensboro. The goal was to preserve and modernize the building, working within the Department of Interior National Park Service’s Guidelines for Historical Preservation, which made Shevell a challenging but rewarding project.

The Shevell Building is a load-bearing masonry structure with a wood post and beam structure within. Eye-catching bands of granite trim, well-preserved terracotta and granite cornices give the façade a distinctive appearance. Lindsey Architecture’s design plan included a comprehensive rehabilitation of the exterior façade, and the restoration of the first floor storefronts and entryways to maintain its historic look. The renovation of the building’s exterior also consisted of refurbishing the original iron fire escape, replacing the windows with energy-efficient reproductions, and bringing the original leaded glass clerestory windows back to their original glory. The interior renovation created a central lobby from the Lewis Street entrance, which was originally the employee entrance to the office and manufacturing areas.

TE Connectivity Office Renovations
TE Connectivity Office Renovations

A world leader in technology and innovation, TE Connectivity is a longtime Lindsey Architecture (LA) client for whom we have designed a number of projects. LA has participated in various renovation projects within their 174,000SF Winston-Salem campus. One of the most impactful projects was the renovation of 40,000SF of office space. As part of this office renovation, Lindsey worked with TE Connectivity to reorganize its office environment to reflect the company’s evolving brand and culture of collaboration. The design solution resulted in a shift from individual offices to a more open workspace environment.

Since an open office concept represented a new way of working for most of the employees, LA collaborated closely with the staff to raise awareness of the benefits of the arrangement and ensure their concerns were heard. Meeting regularly with an employee committee, LA addressed different aspects of the office design, such as the use of a white noise system to eliminate ambient sounds, and the installation of small rooms throughout the office area for private conversations, meetings and phone calls. As a result, the transition to an open workspace was less dramatic and stressful. Subsequently the employees have expressed their preference for the new layout, which features natural light throughout the facility, bringing the outdoors in.

LA provided full project management during the entire design and construction process of the renovation. The multi-phased project required exceptional planning since buildings needed to remain operational during construction. In addition to the office master planning, the renovation included: bringing the restrooms and break rooms into ADA compliance; renovating corridors and stairways; replacing windows; and updating mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to be more energy efficient.

Guilford Metro 911 Renovation

The Guilford Metro 911 facility in Greensboro, North Carolina is a high-volume, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week operation that receives over 1,000 calls a day to dispatch police, fire and EMS responders throughout the county. When Lindsey Architecture was selected to design a complete renovation of the facility, a key part of the project was ensuring that the renovation was done in a way that did not disrupt the vital work done there.

The cutting-edge renovation was done in two phases. Phase One involved an interior renovation, an expansion from 2,400SF to 5,400SF. To create a much more expansive floor plan, the building was taken back to the studs, the floor pulled up and a wall removed to open up the main operations room. That created room for six additional staff members in the main center and a backup space that allows for 18 more staffers who can work with the main center. New state-of-the-art monitors were added to aid dispatchers in directing responders to emergency situations, and dispatchers were given new desks with individual fan systems to heat and cool them during their exhausting 12-hour shifts. The renovation also incorporated a new high-tech Training Room, as well an Entrance Lobby for the general public and secure office space. New restrooms and a break room were also added. This phase was completed in 2014.

Phase Two involved an exterior renovation designed to give the building a more distinctive identity reflective of the group’s importance in the community. The goal for Phase Two was to transform the non-descript main entrance into a unique modern one, creating awareness within the community and reflecting the important role the Metro 911 facility plays in public safety. This was accomplished through a modern renovation of the façade, giving the building a more dynamic and appealing appearance. The renovation also provided a more accessible entry from the parking lot. Phase Two was completed 2016.

Adding to the complexity of the tasks, both projects accommodated public and secure access to the building while updating security standards to comply with the Department of Homeland Security specifications. We were able to successfully meet the challenges of creating a secure, yet welcoming, facility while incorporating all of the requirements within the defined budget.

TransformGSO Renovation

Convertion an old livery stable into TransformGSO, previously HQ Greensboro, a visionary co-op office and meeting space that inspires and celebrates the spirit of entrepreneurship, was the design goal when Lindsey Architecture took on the renovation of this historic building in downtown Greensboro. The idea behind HQ Greensboro was to create a true community for entrepreneurs, providing a space to work, meet, network, collaborate or simply “hang out.” It brings together a wide variety of businesses in both private and shared environments to allow a type of business incubator to naturally happen, fostering economic growth and development. In addition, the building serves the general community by making its common areas available for public events.

This renovation was especially challenging since it involved modernizing a structure originally built in 1898 as a stable and carriage house, and turning it into the type of multi-functional space needed for today’s business environment. The building featured exposed brick walls, high ceilings and large openings, and many of these architectural and design characteristics were not only retained and refurbished, but were also used as the inspiration for new elements introduced in the design.

The 10,700SF flexible floor plan holds 15 private suites, 10 single-person semi-private offices, and an open co-working space with worktables and soft seating areas. The facility houses three large conference rooms, one small meeting room, and three phone booths for private calls. Other common rooms include a multi-purpose room for classes, workshops, and events, as well as a cafe space, a bar, and specialty coffee equipment.
